Abstract: I will speak about a conjectural (due to V.V. Shokurov) approach to characterization of toric varieties, discuss some of its positive instances and the case where it breaks. I'll also try to discuss one possible application of this characterization to rationality problem for quotients of Abelian varieties by finite groups.
